Winter Returns to South Bengal: Temperatures Set to Drop by Five Degrees

Chilly Mornings and Fog Ahead as December Brings a Cold Spell

South Bengal is set to experience its second spell of winter as temperatures drop significantly after a recent cyclonic disturbance. While early mornings have seen mild chills, the true winter feel has been missing. However, with the start of December, a noticeable cold wave is expected, bringing temperatures down by as much as five degrees Celsius across various districts.

Temperature Forecast for Kolkata and Surrounding Regions

According to the Meteorological Department, Kolkata’s maximum temperature today (Thursday) is 27 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 17 degrees Celsius—markedly lower than yesterday. By the weekend, Kolkata and surrounding areas are likely to experience a full-fledged winter chill, with minimum temperatures possibly dropping to around 15 degrees Celsius.

District-wise Temperature and Weather Predictions

Weather experts predict that by the weekend, the minimum temperature in several South Bengal districts could fall by three to five degrees Celsius. Early mornings will bring a biting cold, particularly in the western districts and parts of North Bengal. No rainfall is expected in South Bengal until Monday, with dry weather prevailing across all districts.

Fog Alert and North Bengal Outlook

This week, dense morning fog is expected in districts such as West Midnapore, Bankura, West Bardhaman, Birbhum, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Malda, and North and South Dinajpur. These areas have been issued light to moderate fog advisories. Additionally, due to a western disturbance, light rain is forecast for Darjeeling and Kalimpong today and tomorrow. The rest of North Bengal will experience dry weather.

Residents of South Bengal should prepare for colder days ahead as temperatures drop and fog sets in, marking the true onset of winter. The return of chilly mornings will bring a seasonal feel, especially for those in rural and western areas.
