Summer Vacation Declared in Govt. Schools, Mamata Urges Private Schools to Follow

Amid heatwave, CM Mamata Banerjee advises all schools to prioritize student safety

In light of the extreme heatwave sweeping across West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced an early summer vacation for all government schools. The decision was taken after a meeting with top administrative officials including Chief Secretary Harikrishna Dwivedi.

While the order officially applies to government-run schools, Mamata Banerjee has also appealed to private schools across the state to consider declaring holidays from Rabindra Jayanti (May 9) onwards, emphasizing the need for child safety during such harsh weather conditions.

“Due to the rising temperature and to protect the health of children, government schools will remain closed from now. I also request private schools to declare holidays starting from Rabindra Jayanti. Let the children stay safe at home,” the CM said.

The move comes amid reports of record-high temperatures and health risks to young students. Authorities have stated that further decisions regarding reopening dates will be communicated based on weather forecasts and heatwave intensity.

Health experts have praised the move, citing it as a much-needed preventive measure. Several private institutions are reportedly considering aligning their schedules with the state government’s announcement.
