The R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata is embroiled in controversy as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigates whether 15 medical students tampered with crucial evidence at the scene of a rape and murder before police arrived. The incident occurred on August 9 when the body of a female doctor was discovered in a seminar hall on the hospital’s fourth floor.
According to CBI sources, a video recorded by an assistant sub-inspector, who was the first police officer to reach the crime scene, raises serious questions about the actions of these students. The footage shows approximately 15 medical students, including some who later joined protests, freely moving around the body and the surrounding area, potentially contaminating the crime scene. The CBI suspects that this could have led to the loss of crucial forensic evidence, including fingerprints and footprints of the actual perpetrator.
The investigation intensified after the officer, now questioned by the CBI, submitted his mobile phone video along with a General Diary (GD) entry from the hospital’s police outpost. The GD entry and video footage indicate that by the time the officer arrived, the medical students were already present, moving around the body and the stage where it was found. Some were even seen taking photos and videos of the scene.
The police officer’s testimony suggested that the uncontrolled movement of individuals around the crime scene may have destroyed vital evidence. However, at that moment, without a formal police report filed, the officer felt it was beyond his authority to stop the students. Instead, he recorded the scene on his phone and later filed a GD entry at the hospital’s outpost.
CBI Scrutiny on Student Protestors
The CBI has now turned its focus on some of the medical students who were present at the crime scene. Notably, a few of these individuals have been part of ongoing junior doctors’ protests. Investigators are examining whether any of these students deliberately tampered with the crime scene or were involved in an attempt to obstruct the investigation.
According to CBI sources, forensic evidence plays a pivotal role in this high-profile rape and murder case, and any tampering could severely hinder the investigation. The fact that many of these students were seen casually moving around the body, potentially compromising key evidence, has raised serious concerns.
Furthermore, some students who were present at the scene have already been questioned by the CBI, and more could be called in for further investigation. The CBI is carefully scrutinizing their actions and cross-referencing their involvement in the protests with the timeline of the crime.
What Happens Next?
As the CBI deepens its investigation, the actions of these students remain under close watch. With the video footage and GD entry now in hand, the CBI will determine whether any of the individuals present at the crime scene were involved in tampering with evidence. The outcome of this investigation could have significant ramifications, not only for the ongoing case but also for the broader concerns about transparency and justice in the medical community.
