Kolkata Prepares for Cyclone Dana, Heavy Rainfall Expected Later This Week

With Cyclone Dana Looming, Kolkata Municipal Corporation Steps Up Precautionary Measures Ahead of Heavy Rains

As of Tuesday, a cyclonic storm named Dana is yet to fully form over the Bay of Bengal, but the associated low-pressure system is expected to intensify into a deep depression by tonight. This system is likely to strengthen further into Cyclone Dana, which could bring heavy rainfall to Kolkata on Thursday and Friday. In light of the potential weather threat, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has already begun taking precautionary measures.

On Monday, Kolkata Municipal Commissioner Dhaval Jain held a meeting with senior officials to discuss preparedness for the upcoming cyclone. Later in the evening, Jain also attended a meeting led by Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to review the city’s disaster management plans. Mayor Firhad Hakim has directed KMC officials to ensure that all necessary preparations are in place to deal with Cyclone Dana’s potential impact, with no room for error.

Safety and Maintenance Work Underway

As part of the city’s preparedness efforts, the KMC has begun inspecting streetlight poles across Kolkata to ensure no exposed electrical wires are present. Authorities are focusing on proper earthing for all poles to prevent any risk of electrocution during the storm. Additionally, the KMC is preparing to handle situations where trees may be uprooted due to strong winds and rain. Special teams will be stationed at each borough office to respond quickly if trees fall and block roads.

With heavy rains likely, there is concern about potential waterlogging in several parts of the city. To mitigate this, the KMC’s drainage division has been placed on high alert. The control room at the KMC will remain operational 24/7, while all 79 drainage pumping stations across the city, equipped with 450 pumps, will be kept active during the storm. Temporary pumps will also be deployed in areas prone to water accumulation.

Emergency Equipment and Personnel Ready

To ensure rapid clearance of uprooted trees, the KMC has arranged for hydraulic ladders, cranes, pay loaders, and dumpers. Special attention is being paid to ensure that roads remain open for traffic, with additional emphasis placed on quick response times. Kolkata Police may also be called upon to assist in the event of severe disruptions.

One concern that is particularly on the minds of KMC officials is the upcoming Kali Puja and Diwali festivals next week. Extensive decorations, including lighting and pandals, have already been set up across the city. The fear is that Cyclone Dana’s strong winds and heavy rain could cause damage to these installations, creating further logistical challenges for the civic body to restore normalcy before the festivals.

While the full impact of Cyclone Dana remains uncertain, KMC officials are not leaving anything to chance. Precautionary measures are being put in place, and the civic body will be closely following any additional guidelines issued by the state government as the storm approaches.
