Gas Prices Surge Again Ahead of Durga Puja, Straining Common People

With just eight days left before the Durga Puja festivities begin, the common people of Kolkata are grappling with another round of price hikes. On Tuesday morning, it was announced that commercial gas prices have jumped by nearly ₹50 in one go. The price of a 19 kg cylinder has risen by ₹48.50, while the cost of a 5 kg free trade LPG cylinder has increased by ₹12. Additionally, the price of a 47.5 kg commercial cylinder has surged by ₹120.

According to the newly released price list, the price of a 19 kg cylinder in Kolkata has now reached ₹1850.50, up from ₹1802.50 in September. This translates to an increase of ₹48 for each commercial gas cylinder. The 47.5 kg cylinder has also seen a price rise of ₹120 in Kolkata. However, the price of domestic cooking gas remains unchanged.

Notably, during the Lok Sabha elections, there was a temporary reduction in the price of commercial gas to provide relief to small food businesses and auto-rickshaw drivers. However, this relief vanished soon after the elections, leading to continuous price increases for the last three months. Following August and September, gas prices are again on the rise in October. Reports indicate that over the past three months, the price of a 19 kg commercial gas cylinder has increased by a total of ₹94.

The rise in commercial gas prices significantly impacts sectors like hotels, restaurants, and catering services, which rely heavily on gas for their operations. This increase undoubtedly adds pressure on business owners, especially during the festive season when dining out becomes more common. Consequently, the burden of this price hike will indirectly affect the general public, making festive celebrations feel a little less joyful.

The news of rising gas prices has elicited concerns among the public, with many questioning how these price hikes will affect their daily lives. While the price of cooking gas for households remains steady, the increase in commercial gas prices will likely lead to higher food prices and other essential commodities.

The current economic climate poses significant challenges for small businesses and everyday consumers alike. As the government considers measures to control inflation and stabilize prices, many are hoping for relief that would ease the financial strain on the average citizen.

As the joyous season of Durga Puja approaches, the continued rise in gas prices has cast a shadow over celebrations. The festival, which symbolizes joy and togetherness, is now met with concerns about how to manage expenses amidst rising costs. The public calls for the government to intervene and control these price hikes, ensuring that the festive spirit is not dampened by economic difficulties.
