In a span of just a few hours, two regions in India—Delhi and Bihar—experienced earthquakes measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale, leaving residents in a state of panic. The tremors, though moderate in magnitude, were felt intensely due to their shallow epicenters, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
Earthquake in Bihar: The earthquake in Bihar occurred at 8:02 AM on Monday, with its epicenter located in the Sivan district. The tremors were felt across a wide area of the district, and the epicenter was reported to be 10 kilometers below the surface. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or significant damage so far. However, the sudden shaking prompted many locals to rush out of their homes in fear.
Earlier Tremors in Delhi: Just a few hours before the Bihar earthquake, Delhi and its surrounding areas were also shaken by a 4.0 magnitude quake at 5:36 AM. The epicenter of this tremor was only 5 kilometers below the surface, which experts believe contributed to the heightened intensity felt by residents. Many locals claimed that the shaking felt much stronger than a typical 4.0 magnitude quake.
Prime Minister Modi Urges Calm
Following the tremors in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to reassure citizens. He tweeted, “Earthquake tremors have been felt in Delhi and nearby areas. I urge everyone to remain calm. Be prepared for possible aftershocks and stay alert. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.”
Similar Intensity in Both Regions: Interestingly, both Delhi and Bihar experienced earthquakes of the same intensity, with the tremors occurring just two and a half hours apart. The NCS has confirmed that the shallow depth of the epicenters in both regions likely amplified the impact, making the quakes feel more severe than their measured magnitude.
No Major Damage Reported: As of now, there have been no reports of significant damage or injuries in either Delhi or Bihar. However, the incidents have reignited discussions about earthquake preparedness in regions that are not traditionally considered high-risk zones.
While the earthquakes in Delhi and Bihar were relatively mild, they served as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of seismic activity. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and residents are advised to remain cautious and prepared for any potential aftershocks.
