Emergency Response Underway as Authorities Assess Damage and Rescue Operations
The recent onslaught of Cyclone ‘Dena’ has left Balasore, Odisha, in disarray. While the cyclone has now passed, the aftermath has resulted in heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several districts, with Balasore being among the hardest hit. The sheer volume of rain has led to the formation of flash floods, creating new fears for residents in 20 villages within the district.
Two Days of Continuous Rainfall
According to administrative sources, the heavy rainfall, exacerbated by Cyclone ‘Dena’, has inundated numerous villages over the last two days. The Similipal hills in the Mayurbhanj district have received substantial rainfall, causing dangerously elevated water levels in the Budhabalanga, Sono, and Kansabanasa rivers, which flow through Balasore. As a result, riverside villages have become submerged, leading to widespread flooding.
The most affected blocks in Balasore include Upra, Soro, Khaira, Simulia, Bahanga, Remuna, and the district headquarters itself. Local reports indicate that flash floods have impacted around 20 villages due to the relentless rain. However, there has been a silver lining as rainfall ceased on Saturday morning, allowing floodwaters to begin receding in some areas.
Monitoring and Emergency Measures
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari has reassured the public that, so far, no flood situation has been declared in the state. While the water levels in the Budhabalanga river have increased, they have not exceeded the danger mark. Continuous monitoring of river conditions is being conducted by authorities to ensure public safety.
Fire department officials reported that 10 individuals stranded in Remuna were rescued on Saturday, highlighting the ongoing emergency response efforts. Balasore District Collector Surya Banshi Mohan Bikas stated that assessments of the damage caused by the cyclone and subsequent flooding are underway, particularly in the heavily affected blocks of Khaira, Simulia, Bahanga, Soro, and Upra.
