Assam Bans Beef Consumption Completely: Himanta Government Implements Strict New Law
Tighter Regulations to Prohibit Beef in Hotels, Restaurants, and Public Events Across the State
Assam has officially banned beef consumption statewide. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the existing laws concerning beef are being amended with stricter regulations. This will enforce a complete prohibition on beef consumption in hotels, restaurants, and public spaces.
New Legal Provisions
The Assam cabinet recently reviewed the current beef regulations and decided on significant amendments. Previously, selling beef was restricted, and consuming it within a five-kilometer radius of temples was forbidden. Now, these rules will be extended to cover the entire state. The sale of beef in hotels and restaurants will be completely prohibited, and public or event-based consumption will also be banned.
Enforcement and Implications
Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the success of the anti-cattle slaughter law introduced three years ago and highlighted the need for further strengthening it. The move aligns with other BJP-governed states like Madhya Pradesh, where similar laws are strictly enforced.
The announcement raises concerns about potential measures, reminiscent of recent incidents in Madhya Pradesh, where homes were demolished after accusations of storing beef. Observers are speculating whether Assam might see similar enforcement strategies.
